YouTube Go was launched in 2016 for developing markets as a lightweight alternative to the regular app, but will disappear in August, the platform announced on community forums.

The video platform advised lite app users to switch to the regular YouTube app on their Android or visit youtube.com in their browser.

When YouTube Go was introduced five years ago, users didn’t have the option to comment, post and create content, or use dark mode. However, all of these features have become an integral part of the video platform which is why the app will no longer be available.

The announcement also confirmed that there have been improvements in performance, particularly on low-end devices, and the regular YouTube app will no longer be a burden on connectivity or data pricing. Further checks are also underway to reduce data usage, which will help viewers with limited plans.

It should also be mentioned that the smartphone market has evolved dramatically over the past five years. Manufacturers are launching devices with more RAM and storage, better processing power and battery management, all of which help normal apps run smoothly.
