We have already seen CAD-based renders of the iPhone 14 series, now it seems that the design is close enough to be able to start producing metal molds, which will be used in making phone cases. Photos of such molds have started circulating on Weibo, confirming that Apple will be reducing the size options for its main series from three to two.

As you can see from the labels, there will be two 6.1 “models and two 6.7” models. That’s right, the mini is out, a non-Pro Max is in. In keeping with tradition, only Pro models will have a third camera on the back: a telephoto module.

The generation 14 will miss the periscope cameras, but it is said to be equipped with an upgraded main camera with a 48MP sensor. This should allow for 8K video recording and better digital zoom. Note that analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that only Pro models will receive the new sensor.

The camera bumps on the two Pro models are expected to be larger and thicker than the 13 Pro duo, likely to accommodate the new camera hardware. Non-Pro models might stick to the same camera hardware, but it goes further – we’ve seen rumors that they’ll use last year’s Apple A15 chipset, while Pros will get the new A16. This new chip is expected to bring additional processing power to handle 8K video capture.

The most notable changes of this generation may be in the front, not the back. For the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, however, they are expected to go from a notch to a double-hole design. The iPhone 14 and 14 Max will likely stick with the notch, but they should at least be upped to a 120Hz refresh rate.
