Apple is preparing to launch the 9 Series of its smartwatches, but leaks and analyst forecasts so far indicate that the new watches are “broadly unchanged” from 2022 models. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the 9 Series will “probably the smallest update in the product’s history”.
The new Apple Watches will bring a faster chipset and new colors, but that’s about it. If you bought a 2022 watch, you’ll have very little reason to upgrade it. And it’s the same story every year, so now Apple is reportedly having a serious internal discussion about stretching Watch generations: longer times between updates, but more notable updates.
It’s likely that Apple will continue with the annual release cycle, mostly in an effort to lure users away from other smartwatch brands rather than getting Apple Watch users to upgrade every year.
The 10th generation is coming, and of course, Apple plans to call it “Watch X”. In contrast to the 9 Series, the X will be the biggest update in Apple Watch history, Gurman says. This tracks watchOS 10, which is a fundamental rethinking of Apple’s wrist operating system. However, watchOS 10 will roll out to older watches as well, so it’s not a feature unique to the 2024 generation.
Apple is looking to make the Watch X case thinner, and for the first time, it’s changing the way wrist bands attach to the case. The current system takes up too much space, which could have been used for the battery, insiders say. A magnetic attachment system is being considered, but may not be ready for launch next year.
Apple pioneered LTPO displays with Watch Series 5, now it’s ready for the next evolutionary leap: microLED displays. Also, Cupertino has been working on a blood pressure sensor for a few years now and it could finally be ready by 2024.
