Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted an update on Apple’s 5G modem situation in the state. In 2019, Apple acquired Intel’s modem business so that Apple could finally begin manufacturing its own 5G chips for the iPhone.

Reports on Apple’s development of the 5G modem began in late 2020, but Kuo’s latest note reveals that Apple will not be ready to transition to Apple’s 5G modem until 2024.

Kuo noted that the “development of Apple’s 5G modem chip may have failed” and that Qualcomm will continue to be the only 5G chip supplier for Apple’s 2023 iPhones. Shortly after the release of Kuo’s report, Qualcomm’s shares rose more than 3%. As for CNBCQualcomm previously planned to provide 20% of 5G modems for iPhones in 2023.

Apple’s 5G modems are reportedly still in development. Kuo predicts that Apple’s chips will eventually replace Qualcomm’s 5G modems on the new iPhones. When Apple is ready, Qualcomm is expected to have diversified and grown enough to offset the revenue impact it would have faced once Apple moved away from Qualcomm modems.
