In typical Google fashion, leaks from Google’s next-generation hardware have been in abundance, only this time around Google hasn’t waited to reveal its fall lineup, instead teasing early renders during the I / O of Google in May. The Pixel event wrapped up Thursday morning, but there aren’t any surprises to announce if you’ve been following the leaks over the past few weeks.
We have a new Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel Watch, and have a look at Google’s next Pixel Tablet. The launch event took place live and in person with some pre-recorded segments. While it was nice to see a live event, I feel a pre-recorded event would have been shorter and to the point.
Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are incremental updates
Some improvements have been made to the Pixel 7 duo. A new Tensor G2 chipset improves performance and AI processing for photography with an improved GPU that outputs photo tasks at higher speeds, a new modem, and the Tensor core. These changes are welcome improvements to the Pixel 6’s first-generation Tensor.
But all in all, the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro don’t differ much from the Pixel 6 series either in hardware or functionality. The 7 Pro’s ultrawide camera is new and has autofocus for macro photography and Google’s Super Res Zoom has improved. Other new features like Photo Unblur and a cinematic recording mode don’t really thrill the average smartphone user.
The new phones represent a refinement of the Pixel 6 and feel more like updated versions of their predecessors than true successors. On the upside, Google keeps prices the same as last year’s Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, which is really appreciated.
Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are important for the expansion of the markets served by Google. This year, the Pixel flagships are arriving in a few other countries, but they are still far behind other premium smartphone makers in market availability.
Pixel Watch is nice, but it has a lot to perfect
The Pixel Watch seems a couple of years overdue. Sure, in 2020 Google (and many other tech companies) faced severe supply chain constraints, so Pixel Watch is a first-generation product that has a lot to prove. For Google’s Wear OS and for Google’s tiny Pixel ecosystem it went on.
Pixel Watch’s design and style are elegant and stylish. Paired with Wear OS, the atmosphere emitted by the Pixel Watch is crisp and useful.
Fitbit’s integration with Wear OS shows the first big benefit of acquiring Fitbit. While the Pixel Watch is the first Wear OS device with platform integration, Google currently sells a Fitbit model that’s cheaper than the Pixel Watch’s $ 349 price tag with more comprehensive fitness tracking features.

The announced software features were nothing new. Google has provided many examples of things you can do with the Pixel Watch that were already possible on older Wear OS watches. Of course, the facelift it got is welcome but long overdue.
Pixel Watch has big shoes to fill like Wear OS’s poster child. The company promises 24 hours of battery life, which looks like charging will be a daily affair. However, it is too early to make a judgment on the resistance.
The Google Pixel watch
The price of the Pixel Watch seems high. Although positioned alongside Fossil’s Wear OS range of designer watches, the Pixel Watch should be able to keep up with the looks. Even without seeing the smartwatch, a $ 299 price tag would seem more appropriate, but still expensive.
The Pixel Watch is supposed to be like an Apple Watch equivalent for Android phones, so the expectations are very high.
Pixel Tablet mocks a versatile smart home display
Google has revealed some new angles of the Pixel Tablet, but it has been more of an extended teaser as the new Pixel Tablet won’t arrive until next year. Google’s efforts to improve the Android form factor for tablets have been evident since its introduction of Android 12L.
The Pixel Tablet takes an approach that blurs the line between a large-screen portable device and one of Google’s Home Hub smart displays. The charging speaker dock makes the tablet double as a smart display that shows relevant information when docked. It will listen and respond to commands from the Google Assistant.
The Pixel Tablet with wireless charging speaker combination makes it an ideal device for casual sharing with other family members in the house. We hope Google plans to showcase the Pixel Tablet with a productivity-focused accessory as a kind of magnetic folio keyboard.
This year’s event has slightly enhanced the Pixel brand even further
With no substantial changes to the Pixel lineup and a seemingly disappointing Pixel Watch, this year’s Made by Google event showed incremental updates for the Google Pixel and a late entry for Google’s proprietary version of Wear OS.
Compared to Apple and Samsung, Google is still far behind in sales volumes, but aims to ship more Pixels next year and even more the following year. The Google Pixel Watch is expected to be the Apple Watch equivalent of Android phones, and based on what Google announced Thursday, it has a lot of work to do to get there.
